Support the Dream Act
Dear Senator Burris,
As one of your constituents, I urge you to support the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act (DREAM ACT,) that will be introduced by US Senator Dick Durbin. The Dream Act will allow immigrant kids who want to fully contribute to American society, to have a fair opportunity to earn their citizenship.
Hundreds of undocumented Illinois students graduate from high school each year. Many of these students have shown enormous potential through high grades and strong leadership skills. They are young people who have lived in the U.S. for most of their lives and desire only to call this country their home. Even though they were brought to the U.S. years ago as children, they face unique barriers to higher education, and are unable to work legally in the U.S., and often live in constant fear of detection by immigration authorities.
As President Obama said in his address to congress, creating an educated workforce will stimulate our economy, increase productivity and help the U.S compete in the global economy. Students who would benefit from the DREAM Act are our future teaches, doctors, nurses, and lawyers. The DREAM Act will allow thousands of immigrant students to access higher education and maximize their contributions to our economy and communities.
I believe that the Dream Act is a positive step towards comprehensive solutions that uphold our values of fairness, opportunity and accountability. I urge you to support this legislation and become a co-sponsor of the Dream Act.
Sincerely,
